Washington DC Trip Update

DC trip banner8th grade Parents,

I am contacting you to share that there has been some important information that was recently brought to my attention regarding our plans to travel to Washington, D.C. in June of 2021.

The News:

First of all, it is important to know that this trip was first introduced to families last year prior to all of us being sent home due to Covid-19.  I purposely start promoting the trip very early to allow families as much time as possible to financially prepare for the cost of the trip.  Last spring some families had already registered for the June 2021 trip before we all were abruptly sent home.

In the days following the Washington D.C. Trip Family Informational meeting that I held on October 13th it was brought to my attention that The Board of Education and Appleton Area School District has decided to suspend all overnight travel/field trips during the 2020-2021 school year.  Since this news has been brought to my attention, I have been in contact with Worldstrides, JMMS Administration, and District Leadership to seek a solution to this dilemma.

The Decision:

We are working with the families that previously registered for the trip to see if they would prefer to cancel the trip or try to post the trip into August (beginning of the 2021-2022 school year).  However, postponing the trip to late August does not guarantee that the trip will happen because we do not know if the prohibition of overnight travel/field trips will be extended into the 2021-2022 school year or not due to the fluid nature of the Covid-19 pandemic.  To financially protect you from incurring any financial loss I have been informed that no new families will be allowed to register for the trip.

Many of you and your students expressed a lot of excitement to me about the trip and I feel horrible having to deliver this bad news to you. I look forward to providing this opportunity to my students and their families each year.  It really is an awesome experience for everyone filled with tons of fun and learning that just can't happen in a classroom.  I hope that you will all accept my humblest of apologies regarding this matter.

Final Thoughts:

Obviously, I have no idea what the future holds, however I wanted to run an idea past you.  Historically speaking, this field trip has only been offered to 8th grade students and their families.  However, due to the fact that the strange and challenging times in which we live is taking this opportunity away from you, I would be open to the idea of extending this travel opportunity to you and your student if I can travel again in June of 2022.

I don't know if you and your then high school student would still be interested in this option and/or would mind traveling with 8th graders or not, but if you think that is something you might be interested in let me know, and I will be sure to reach out to you when and if I able to promote a trip for June of 2022.

Once again, I do apologize for any disappointment I have caused you or your student.  If you have any other questions, feel free to contact me, and do let me know if you would like me to keep you in mind for a future trip or not.

Take care,

Jolenne King
